Masala chai is a tea beverage made by boiling black tea in milk and water with a blend of aromatic herbs and spices. Introducing in India, the beverage has gained worldwide popularity growing a story in coffee and tea houses. Traditionally, prepared as a perfect blend of fresh cardamom seeds, cinnamon sticks, ground cloves, crushed ginger, and black peppercorn together with black tea leaves, local variants include tea bags for mixture, prepared powdered mixtures, and concentrates.
The main ingredients are:
- 2 cups water
- 4 teaspoons sugar or add as per taste
- Take 2 teaspoons of black tea – either granules or tea leaves
- ¼ cup milk or add as per flavor
Spices (Masala), or use masala tea powder
- 1-inch cinnamon
- 2 green cardamoms
- 2 cloves
- 1-inch ginger
Method to prepare:
- Take cinnamon, green cardamoms, cloves, and peeled ginger and crush coarsely, and keep aside.
- Heat water in a saucepan or a shallow pan with a handle.
- When the water comes to a boil, add the ground spices.
- Brew the spices with the water for 2 to 3 minutes.
- Add sugar as per taste.
- Now add 2 teaspoons of tea powder. Again brew for a minute. The boiling time depends on how strong you want your tea. If you prefer a strong tea, then boil for a few more minutes.
- Add milk as needed and boil for 2 to 3 minutes.
- Pour the tea through a strainer into a bowl or pan and pour them into the cup.
